Site Senior Executive

In New Zealand, mining operations are regulated under the Health and Safety at Work (Mining Operations and Quarrying Operations) regulations. These regulations require SSEs to hold a current certificate of competence and carry significant responsibilities for health and safety systems and principal hazard management at a mine.

A course for SSEs often aligns with the competency requirements needed to attain or maintain that certificate of competence, and provides industry-relevant training on how to meet these legal and operational responsibilities.

Here are the main reasons people pursue it:

  • Builds a clear understanding of legal duties and liabilities as an SSE.
  • Develops skills to lead a strong safety culture.
  • Enhances the ability to identify, assess, and control site risks.
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional development.
  • Improved site performance leads to fewer disruptions, lower incident-related costs, with higher productivity and morale.
  • Clearer roles and accountability.
  • Strengthens qualifications for senior management or executive roles.
